A new anti-fashion, normcore meets craftcore aesthetic is being coined the “weird girl aesthetic.” Bella Hadid’s street style offers an interpretation of the aesthetic, mixing colorful patterns, statement textures, and playful accessories. On TikTok, fashion enthusiasts are experimenting with re-worn pieces and excessive layering as they find that one person’s weird is another’s wearable.
MAXIMALIST REVIVAL
In an eruption of color and texture, the maximalism hashtag has over 330k posts on Instagram and over 302M views on TikTok. A high volume trend, there are 13.7K average weekly searches for maximalism, +6% to last year.
NOSTALGIA NOW
Consumers are seeking familiarity in the 90s and Y2K eras. Searches for Y2K fashion are +71% to last year and social buzz is +171% to last year. Searches for Y2K makeup are +176% to last year and social buzz is +1,500% to last year.

THE RISE OF ELEVATED BASICS
Elevated basics and modern workwear are gaining new life on TikTok. Brands like Aritzia, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Djerf Avenue are leading the way as Gen Z turns trousers and a white tee into the latest “it girl” outfit.The hashtag #aritzia has over 738M views on TikTok, while #abercrombie has over 351M views and #djerfavenue has over 115M views.
CITY EXODUS
The rise of remote work–and inflation–have more and more people leaving major cities. Nearly 5 million Americans have moved since 2020 because of remote work opportunities, according to Adam Ozimek, the chief economist for the Economic Innovation Group (The Atlantic). According to an analysis of census data by the Brookings scholar William Frey, the populations of the twenty largest metropolitan areas in the country shrank by a combined 900,000 people in 2021.

Pearl is having a moment as consumers search for the naturally occurring beauty in all formats. Pearl heels, pearl bobby pins, freshwater pearl bracelets, pearl handbags, and pearl dresses are safe bets, while pearl barrettes and pearl slides are emerging trends to watch.

Brands like Mirror Palais and Fait Par Foutch are bringing wearable romance to the forefront. A higher price point and attention to detail creates a kind of consumer-friendly couture. Mirror Palais’ most recent, widely-shared collection featured draped dresses, openwork, and bustiers. The hashtag #mirrorpalais has nearly 39M views on TikTok. Fait Par Foutch also specializes in handcrafted romantic styles, including corsets, sheer blouses, and toile skirts.
DOPAMINE DRESSING
Aptly coined “dopamine dressing,” consumers are looking to make a statement with party-ready attire and glamorous accessories. A reaction to pandemic fatigue, consumers are searching for bows, beads, and embellishments.
HISTORICAL INSPIRATION
Hollywood’s fascination with historical fiction and royalty is made clearer with each new release. Season two of Bridgerton premiered in March 2022 and The Crown will be entering its fifth and final season at the end of the year. Hulu recently announced that there will be a third season of The Great and Netlflix is set to release a modern interpretation of Jane Austen’s novel Persuasion– starring Dakota Johnson–in July 2022.
